MSI Unknown Device: Read Hardware IDs Before Choosing a Driver

Record a Windows device hardware ID and the complete MSI SKU before looking for a matching driver package.

Reviewed 2026-10-05 · Windows Device Manager identification for MSI PCs. No database of verified hardware-ID-to-MSI-package mappings is provided here.

Quick answer

An Unknown device name does not identify the required package. Read its hardware IDs, record the exact MSI model and installed system, then seek an official matching package; a vendor name alone is insufficient.

1. Capture the device identification

Open Device Manager, find the affected entry and open Properties. In Details, choose Hardware Ids. Copy the listed values, rather than only the generic device name. Microsoft explains that Windows uses these IDs when matching driver packages.

2. Preserve the full list

A device can report multiple IDs, generally ordered from more specific to less specific. Record the complete strings without removing revision or subsystem information. Do not treat a broad vendor identifier as an exact device match.

3. Match the computer and operating system

Record the complete MSI SKU and installed Windows system separately. Compare them with official support information and package notes. Our archived titles and factory specifications do not establish a hardware-ID match.

4. Prepare a useful support request

If the official matching package remains unclear, give MSI support the device name, hardware IDs, visible Device Manager error, Windows version and exact model. Omit serial numbers and product keys from public posts.

When to stop

Do not force an INF installation or borrow a similar model’s package when the ID and system match cannot be verified.
