MSI Driver ZIP Has No Setup.exe: EXE, INF & BAT Installation

Identify the extracted MSI driver installer format and follow its package instructions instead of running unrelated files.

Reviewed 2026-10-04 · MSI notebook driver packages verified for the exact model and installed Windows version. Not BIOS or firmware updates.

Quick answer

A driver ZIP is a container, not the installer. Extract it, read its instructions, and identify whether MSI supplies an EXE, INF or BAT installation method. Missing setup.exe alone does not mean the driver is broken.

1. Confirm the package before opening it

Compare the complete SKU, installed Windows version and component supplier with the package record. Save its official source and notes. A successful download does not prove compatibility.

2. Extract the archive and show extensions

Extract the ZIP into a folder, then enable file-name extensions in File Explorer. Read the package instructions before selecting a file. Avoid running every executable or script in the folder.

3. Choose the documented installer method

MSI describes different methods: an EXE installer is opened normally; an INF may offer Install in its context menu; a BAT installer may require administrator privileges. Use the method provided for that package. If several files exist, its instructions decide which is the entry point.

4. Restart and check the result

Follow the installer prompts and restart when required. Review the target device in Device Manager. If installation reports an unsupported device or system, stop and verify the match rather than forcing the package.

When to stop

Stop if the source, exact model, supported system or installer entry point is uncertain. This article does not prescribe firmware flashing.
